Goal: Urge well-known American fashion designer to stop using wool in favor of animal-free materials
Ralph Lauren still uses wool in his fashion line, despite knowing of the horrific abuse sheep endure during shearing. Many people are misinformed about where wool comes from. Wool is not acquired by giving a sheep a simple haircut. Sheep shearers are often paid by volume or how much wool they can produce in a single days work, not by the hour. This encourages shearers to work very quickly and oftentimes in a violent manner, leading to severe injuries for sheep. Many sheep end up with cuts, scrapes and even large chunks of skin cut off by shearers. There is no medical attention given to sheep that are injured during the process of shearing and many die in the process each year from maltreatment, neglect and sickness.
In 2013, 3.7 million sheep were shorn in the United States. In an investigation by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) workers in the U.S. were found abusing and neglecting sheep at 14 separate ranches across Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska. Considering Wyoming is the country’s second-leading wool producer, this is quite alarming. Sheep were held down by force and even beaten using tools in order to subdue them enough to shear them. When sheep panicked—a natural reaction for any animal in such a stressful situation—workers stood or stomped on their faces and heads to restrain them. Sheep were also seen being thrown and slammed onto wooden floors.
Sheep that were unprofitable or injured, likely from the unsanitary and negligent conditions on the ranch, were either shot to death or butchered. These actions took place in front of other sheep, causing further distress to those awaiting shearing.
To cause animals such distress by not carefully handling them and then respond to their reactions by further abusing them, is by all means intolerable. By signing the petition below, you will be letting Ralph Lauren know that disgusting behavior like this is clearly reprehensible and should not be promoted or encouraged by the fashion industry.
Dear Mr. Ralph Lauren,
No living being deserves to be treated the way sheep in the wool industry are treated. Sheep are not numb to the frightening experience of having chunks of their skin cut off through the process of shearing. It is an unsafe and cruel practice, as it is not performed humanly, and there is no excuse for this barbaric behavior.
I ask that you help end this cruelty by no longer using wool in your fashion line. Your line already offers many animal-free clothing alternatives, so there is no justification for supporting this industry. Please strongly contemplate the suffering these sheep undergo at the cost of avoidable fashion.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
