Target: Missouri Governor Jay Nixon
Goal: Praise the governor for vetoing a bill that would allow more concealed guns in schools
A victory for common sense was won recently as Missouri Governor Jay Nixon vetoed a bill that would have allowed teachers to carry concealed guns in schools. The legislation was crafted and passed by the state’s conservative legislature and was intended as a way to increase safety at schools. However, the governor thought otherwise. Though the legislature can attempt to override the veto, for the time being schools will not be flooded with more and more concealed firearms.
The recent focus on preventing mass shootings has often prompted efforts to make it easier for private citizens to carry guns into places that were previously kept free of weapons, like schools or bars. The assumption is that if a shooting occurs, similarly-armed people can stop the shooter before they can do much damage. However, this assumption is wrong; according to Mother Jones, no mass shooting in recent decades has been stopped by another shooter that wasn’t a member of law enforcement. Governor Nixon himself stated that “[a]rming teachers will not make our schools safer”, and while he continues to support armed law enforcement officers present at schools, it is a mistake to give guns to people who should be engaged in the business of teaching.
The rush to arm teachers ignores other ways that gun violence could be reduced, including expanding background checks and access to mental health services. Governor Nixon is correct to oppose more guns in schools. By signing this petition you will thank the governor for acting against misguided gun legislation.
Dear Governor Nixon,
Your recent decision to veto a bill that would allow more concealed guns in schools is a victory for common sense and public safety. Arming more people has not been shown to decrease the destructiveness of mass shootings, and teachers should be focused on teaching, not on acting as bodyguards.
There are many ways to combat gun violence, and increasing the number of guns present in a dangerous situation is certainly not an effective one. Thank you for standing against misguided gun legislation and please continue to do so in the future.
