Target: United States Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell
Goal: Drop plans to introduce useless legislation that legalizes already-legal contraception purchases
Senate conservatives are planning on introducing legislation that “says no employer can block any employee from legal access to her FDA-approved contraceptives”, according to Senator Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader. This move comes in response to Senate liberals and their introduction of a measure that would prevent employers from denying their employees contraception coverage under health care plans. While on the surface these bills appear similar, the truth is that the conservative bill does literally nothing; according to The Rachel Maddow Show the legislation would simply mandate that people be able to buy their own contraception, which is already legal.
In the wake of the recent Hobby Lobby decision by the Supreme Court, various individuals and groups have called for Congress to undo the results of the case. Under the precedent set by Hobby Lobby, private businesses do not have to cover contraception in their employees’ health insurance plans if they are opposed to it on religious grounds, and this state of affairs has been decried by many. Senate conservatives, on the other hand, appear perfectly fine with the outcome. They are certainly allowed to believe what they want and hold their own opinions, but the move to introduce a pointless contraception bill smells of deception. At the very least, it is a tremendous waste of time.
There are many aspects of governance that Senate conservatives could busy themselves with. Pushing a bill that makes legal an already-legal practice is not constructive, and at the worst it is an attempt to trick voters into thinking they have done something useful. Senator Mitch McConnell, as the leader of conservatives in the Senate, has the power to reign his fellows in. By signing this petition, you will call on the senator to set aside the bill and work towards real progress.
Dear Sen. McConnell,
Recently you announced that Senate conservatives plan to introduce a contraception bill in response to the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision. Your proposed bill, however, would only mandate that people be able to purchase their own contraception, which is already legal. The bill therefore would be a complete waste of time and effort.
The time spent on a bill that does literally nothing would be better spent on other aspects of governance. As the Senate Minority Leader you have the power to nip this bill in the bud and move on to more useful work. I urge you to drop plans for the contraception bill.
