Praise Festival for Canceling Captive Elephant Appearance

Target: Bob Steinke, Bourbonnais Friendship Festival Chairman

Goal: Praise festival chairman for canceling appearance of captive elephant

Captive elephant Nosey’s scheduled appearance at the Bourbonnais Friendship Festival in Bourbonnais, Illinois, was recently canceled after animal rights organizations such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) brought Nosey’s case to light. Since her appearance was canceled, Nosey did not have to travel in cramped, uncomfortable conditions to perform tricks and walk in circles repeatedly while allowing patrons to ride on her back.

Hopefully other festivals will follow in the footsteps of the Bourbonnais Friendship Festival and realize that forcing animals like Nosey to perform tricks and give rides for entertainment purposes can create unnatural and extremely stressful situations for the animals involved. This can become dangerous for both the animals as well as the customers.

Nosey has been held in captivity for most of her life, and despite her Florida owners’ multiple violations against the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), nothing has been done to improve her living conditions. Nosey continues to be held in confinement without proper veterinary care while being forced to frequently travel and perform in circuses and festivals. A highly sociable animal, she remains chained alone and does not have any interactions with other elephants during her time in captivity. Solitary confinement for such extended periods of time is completely unacceptable. Nosey belongs with other elephants that she can bond and communicate with, allowing her to exhibit the intimate, linking traits that elephant families are known for in the wild.

Thanks to the Bourbonnais Friendship Festival, there has been a small victory for Nosey in the long battle to save her. It is mindful choices like this one that make a statement, letting others know that using animals for entertainment is cruel and must be stopped.

Dear Bob Steinke,

I am pleased to know that the Bourbonnais Friendship Festival recently canceled the appearance of captive elephant, Nosey. Such intelligent and social animals do not belong at circuses or festivals performing tricks and being in close contact with spectators. It can be dangerous for both the animal and the patrons. You made the right decision by keeping Nosey out of your festival.

By canceling her appearance, you have set an excellent example for other festivals and circuses in the area and around the country that use or may consider using captive animals to attract customers. Thank you for making the considerate, ethical choice to cancel her appearance and stand up for Nosey. Because of your kindness, Nosey was forced to perform at one less festival.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
