Stop Dangerous Rhetoric Aimed at Immigrants

Target: United States Representative Louie Gohmert

Goal: Stop comparing immigration to an invasion

Some words are more dangerous than others, especially when they’re spoken by a sitting Congressman. Representative Louie Gohmert has recently weighed in on a current border crisis caused by thousands of children trying to cross into the United States without documentation. Rep. Gohmert repeatedly made reference to an “invasion” of the state of Texas, and called on the governor to “use whatever means, whether it’s troops, even using ships of war” to repel the undocumented immigrants. Such rhetoric is dangerous and foolish. Young children fleeing violence in their home nations can hardly be described as an “invasion”.

The children who are trying to make their way into the United States are by and large fleeing from violence in their home countries of Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. These countries have higher rates of homicide than other Central American nations, and are generally less safe, according to the Center for American Progress. There has been some effort to convince people to refer to the children as refugees, not as immigrants at all. The US has long been a symbol of hope and of a better life, and the children trying to cross the border are doing so in the hopes that they can turn their fortunes around. There is nothing malicious about them; they simply want peace and happiness.

It is ridiculous to call for efforts to be taken to repel an “invasion” when the “invaders” are innocent children fleeing from death and destruction. Rep. Gohmert, as a Congressman, is in a position of power and authority and should be calling for constructive ways to deal with the situation. Stoking fear and calling for troops and ships of war to end the border crisis isn’t helpful in the slightest. By signing this petition, you will call on Rep. Gohmert to cease his dangerous rhetoric and work towards a real solution.

Dear Representative Gohmert,

Your recent comments concerning the mass of children trying to cross the border were unhelpful and potentially dangerous. There is no need to call on the governor to repel an “invasion”, and stoking fears of undocumented immigrants could lead to violence or discrimination against them. Remember that these people are children, and that they are fleeing terrible situations in their home nations.

The current border crisis has been made as serious as it is by high levels of violence in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Children are running away from death and destruction and look to the US government to help them. As a US Congressman, you are in a position to help solve the crisis through constructive measures, not by calling for troops and ships of war. I urge you to stop your dangerous and misleading rhetoric and to work to improve the prospects of the people who are seeking help from the US.
