Help Protect Whales from Tar Sands Oil Pipeline

Target: Richard Kinder, Chairman and CEO of Kinder Morgan

Goal: Help protect whales from tar sands oil pipeline

North American energy giant Kinder Morgan has proposed an expansion of a tar sands oil pipeline from Vancouver, BC that would ship their product overseas. This puts endangered species, like the North Pacific right whale and the blue whale, in a great deal of danger.

Some have estimated that the number of ships entering whale-feeding grounds would increase by 600%. This is a threat to whales in the area for two reasons. First, the drastically increased number of ships sailing through this area greatly increases the likelihood that there will be whale-ship collisions. Since right whales spend most of their time close to the surface where they can eat, the increased number of boats is an even larger problem. Second, the increased number of ships sailing in the area naturally results in a much higher risk of oil spills.

Kinder Morgan cannot continue with their proposed plan without putting these endangered species in harm’s way. Therefore, Kinder Morgan must know that they will need to reconsider their proposal.

By signing the petition below, you will urge Kinder Morgan Chairman and CEO Richard Kinder to reconsider his proposal and to draft a new proposal that does not put endangered species at risk.

Dear Richard Kinder,

Kinder Morgan’s proposed tar sands oil pipeline, which would head through Vancouver, would put several species of endangered whales in danger. These whales, like the blue whale and the North Pacific right whale, spend much of their time near the surface while they feed. Kinder Morgan’s proposal would dramatically increase the number of oil tankers in their feeding grounds, which puts both the whales and the ships in danger of collisions. These collisions are known to injure and kill whales, while also opening up the opportunity for oil spills that result from these collisions.

I urge you to reconsider Kinder Morgan’s proposed pipeline and to draft a new proposal that does not put endangered species at risk. Please use all of your influence in the Kinder Morgan Company to find a mutually beneficial option that ensures the safety of these animals and the interests of your company.
