Target: Governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder
Goal: Press criminal charges against couple for forcing son to do perform intense exercise routines and locking him in basement
An 11-day search resulted in authorities finding 12-year-old Charlie Bothuell V in the basement of his stepmother’s home. The boy is a victim of domestic abuse, forced to rise before dawn to do intense workouts, and beaten if he does not follow orders. The state is currently trying to terminate the parental rights of his father and stepmother, but more action is needed. Urge the state of Michigan to press criminal charges against both of these abusers.
In the two years that Bothuell was raised in his father’s home, he has suffered immense abuse. His stepmother forces him to rise before dawn to do rigorous exercises. His twice-a-day workout consists of 100 pushups, 200 situps, 100 jumping jacks, 25 arm curls with a 25 pound weight, and pedaling on the elliptical machine. His father would often discipline him with a PVC pipe, smacking it on his butt, feet, chest, head, thighs, sides, and arms. The beating would result in Bothuell being too sore to sit or walk.
On June 14, 2014, Bothuell’s stepmother, Monique Dillard, ordered her son into the basement for not completing his exercises that day. He was told to shut up, and she threatened to use knives if he ever made any noise. Dillard claims that the reason for Bothuell’s intense workouts is because he is overweight and diabetes runs in the family. When his father found out that his son was in the basement, he acted shocked, and pleaded for his son’s immediate return.
Bothuell was found out by the police when he went upstairs to find food and water.
The couple is currently in court while the state tries to terminate their parental rights. However, this case is severe enough that criminal charges should also be pressed. Demand the state of Michigan to press criminal charges against this negligent and abusive couple.
Dear Governor Rick Snyder,
Recently, your police force found a missing twelve-year-old boy in the basement of his home. He had been missing for 11 days, when authorities stumbled upon him leaving the basement in search for food. Charlie Bothuell V is a victim of abuse; his father beat him with a PVC pipe, and his stepmother subjected him to rigorous workouts. His confinement resulted when his stepmother thought he had skipped his exercise routine.
While your state is currently trying to terminate their parental rights, I am writing to urge you to press criminal charges against the parents. This case is severe and cruel enough that both parents must be punished for the abuse and neglect that this child was subjected to.
