Thank Filmmaker for Protecting Animal Actors

Matt Reeves

Target: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Director Matt Reeves

Goal: Thank Dawn of the Planet of the Apes filmmakers for using CGI technology instead of animal actors

Animals who are used in film are typically subjected to abusive training and negligible conditions by trainers who are often only concerned with making money for themselves. Modern technologies like computer-generated imagery (CGI) eliminate the need to use real animals on film sets while giving filmmakers the freedom to explore the greatest limits of their creativity.

Director Matt Reeves expertly used CGI to create impressive ape characters in his new film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which also addresses the issue of human interference into animal habitats. Human actors, like Andy Serkis who plays the film’s lead Caesar, were fitted with motion sensors so that their every movement would be captured by CGI. They then used state-of-the-art arm crutches to perfectly emulate the movements of apes in the wild.

According to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), “Chimpanzees and orangutans used in entertainment are typically torn away from their mothers shortly after birth—a horribly cruel process that causes irreversible psychological harm to the baby and the mother. In order to force young apes to perform on cue, trainers often beat the animals with fists, clubs, or even broom handles. Systematic abuse causes the animals to be constantly anxious and fearful—always anticipating the next blow.”

With his new film, Reeves is continuing the tradition of past films in the Apes franchise. The 2011 film Rise of the Planet of the Apes addressed the heartbreaking realities of the suffering that animals endure from cruel and unnecessary tests and experiments. By signing the petition below, you will add your name to a list of conscientious film fans who want to thank Matt Reeves for using animal-friendly technologies in his film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. If more directors follow in his footsteps, we may soon see an end to the abuse of animals for entertainment once and for all.

Dear Mr. Reeves,

I was pleased to learn that you used CGI instead of animal actors in your new film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. As you know, animals used for entertainment are often abused and neglected by their trainers as they are forced to learn tricks on command.

I am also happy to see that your film addresses the topic of human interference into animal habitats. Thank you for making this film and raising awareness to some of the issues that face animals in entertainment and in the wild.
