Target: Washington Senator Patty Murray
Goal: Thank Senators for attempting to require employers to cover contraceptive care for women after the recent sexist court ruling
A recent Supreme Court ruling ended in favor of the Hobby Lobby corporation. Now, closely-held businesses will be allowed to refuse contraceptives to women. This ruling is blatantly sexist and allows for direct discrimination against women and their bodies. However, in light of this, a few senators from across the country are coming together to create legislation that would override this ruling. The bill would help women obtain the services they need and want without discrimination from their employers.
Senators Patty Murray and Mark Udall have begun this national campaign to create legislation that would require all businesses, no matter their respective religions or beliefs, to comply with the Affordable Care Act’s rules in providing all contraceptive services and products. Murray agrees that a woman’s body is not her boss’s business, and therefore her health should not be in her boss’s hands. The bill would not contradict or disregard the recent Hobby Lobby ruling, but would reassert the existing laws’ authority over businesses. By creating and supporting this potential bill, these senators are standing up for women’s rights. Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, even agreed with this legislative push and wanted to help propel it forward because of its importance. Whether or not other senators support this will clearly show voters which senators support a woman’s ability to obtain contraceptives and which oppose this right.
Thank these senators for supporting women’s rights and demanding that corporations follow the law.
Dear Senator Murray,
I recently read about the Hobby Lobby ruling and its political and social responses of horror. Your new proposed legislation to override the Supreme Court ruling is progressive and just what the country needs to protect women’s rights in her job and in the hospital. By creating and backing this bill, you’ve made the initiative to show businesses that they cannot trample on women’s contraceptive rights. Corporations should not have the ability to deny women any product that allows for her to be healthy and happy.
I fully support your initiative to protect rights for all women with this legislation. I do not agree with the recent Supreme Court decision to allow religious companies to deny women basic healthcare rights. Your work, however, may help change this sexist ruling and allow women to be protected under the Affordable Care Act against any sexist groups. Thank you for your tireless effort to protect women’s rights.
