Target: United States Speaker of the House John Boehner
Goal: Stop the special Benghazi committee from spending millions of taxpayer dollars to conduct an investigation unlikely to uncover any new information
Investigations into the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack in Libya aren’t ending any time soon, and in the meantime they’re getting more expensive. Conservatives in the House of Representatives recently formed the 8th congressional committee to investigate the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi and plan to spend up to $3.3 million on its operation in 2014. Taxpayer dollars are funding the committee’s quest to answer questions that have already been addressed again and again. According to The Rachel Maddow Show, every question the committee plans to ask has been answered in previous investigations.
The attack in Benghazi was a tragedy that claimed lives, and there is every reason to ensure such a thing never happens again. But the new investigation does not promise any new developments. To make matters worse the projected budget of the committee is greater than the yearly amount allotted to the House Committee on Veterans Affairs or the House Committee on Ethics, according to USA Today. Each of these committees actually has a job to do; the Benghazi investigation will be nothing more than an expensive rehashing of old information.
There is no need to waste taxpayer money, especially now in the midst of a recession. Speaker of the House John Boehner, as the most influential member of the House of Representatives, has the power to reign in his fellow members of Congress and ensure that money is spent wisely. Call on the Speaker to demand that the committee disband rather than waste millions of taxpayer dollars.
Dear Speaker Boehner,
Your fellow House conservatives are gearing up for the 8th congressional committee to investigate the terrorist attack on America’s Benghazi consulate. There is not much hope that the committee will discover any new information; the questions asked by its members have already been answered by previous committees. The only thing the committee appears certain to do is squander millions in taxpayer dollars. The projected budget for 2014 is as high as $3.3 million.
There is no reason to continue pursuing expensive and unnecessary investigations into the Benghazi attacks. As the Speaker of the House you have the power to persuade your colleagues to spend their time and Americans’ taxes wisely. I ask you to work to call off the congressional committee.
