Target: Sam Goldman, co-founder and CEO of d.light
Goal: Praise company for creating and selling and affordable energy solution worldwide to people in need
A San Francisco-based company has found a way to make affordable, solar-powered electricity available across the world. In places without reliable electricity grids, the use of kerosene lanterns is common. Kerosene can be expensive and dangerous, easily causing fires and exposing users to toxic fumes. The company d.light aims to change that.
In 2007, the company began with solar-powered lanterns. Now, in 2014, the company has graduated to selling an integrated system, including LED lanterns, a solar panel and a USB port for charging devices such as phones. While the initial cost for the system is about $150—often a steep price for those without reliable electricity—the savings in energy-related costs are well worth it.
This technology may not mean much to those in developed countries, but for the estimated 2 billion around the world without reliable energy, it is vastly important. As the World Bank said, “More than a century after the light bulb was invented most of the African continent is still in the dark after nightfall.”
It isn’t just a light to cook by that makes this technology so important: refrigeration of vaccines and medicines, evening businesses and at-home studying all require reliable electricity.
Applaud d.light for working to spread reliable energy to those in need, and for contributing to their economic growth and physical well-being.
Dear Sam Goldman,
Much of the developing world lacks a reliable energy source, making economic growth difficult for individuals and local businesses. Only 24 percent of the sub-Saharan African population has reliable access to electricity. Without electricity, medicines and vaccines cannot be refrigerated. Without a reliable light source students cannot study in the evening, businesses cannot operate after dark and many people resort to dangerous and expensive kerosene for cooking and lighting.
Your company is helping to change that. With the affordable, integrated systems d.light sells, much of the world can move out of the dark. Not only is the technology you currently market incredibly important at present, the future applications of the technology stand to make an even larger difference in how we source energy worldwide. It also contributes to the economic growth of our planet’s population living in developing countries.
Some 2 billion people are without reliable electricity in the 21st Century, but that does not have to be the case. I praise your company for its innovative approach to solving a huge, international dilemma.
