Target: New Jersey Governor Chris Christie
Goal: Stop vetoing common-sense gun control bills
Conservative Governor of New Jersey Chris Christie continues to oppose gun control legislation, recently vetoing a bill that would limit gun magazines from holding more than 10 bullets. This is not the first piece of legislation related to gun control that the governor has prevented from becoming law; last year he vetoed a bill that would ban .50-caliber weapons. Governor Christie had previously supported the bill in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting, according to The Rachel Maddow Show.
As of 2013, half of all mass shootings in the US involved extended magazines that allowed the shooters to fire for a long time without having to stop to reload, according to Mother Jones. Governor Christie has argued that banning such magazines will not single-handedly end gun violence, and he is correct. However, limiting the number of bullets available to a shooter can save lives.
No single law can ever completely stop deaths and harm from gun violence, but they can help prevent loss of life. Every person saved is a victory, and Governor Christie should understand that. By signing this petition, you will call on the governor to rethink his opposition to gun control bills.
Dear Governor Christie,
After the tragedy of the Sandy Hook shootings, you called for common-sense gun control measures to be taken. Since then, however, you have changed your mind about the necessity of these measures.Your recent veto of a bill that would ban high-capacity magazines in the state of New Jersey is only the latest example of you shutting down laws intended to keep people safe.
You have argued that no one bill can stop all mass shootings, and while this is true, every life saved is a victory. I urge you to show leadership and compassion and stop vetoing gun control laws that will save lives.
