Target: Councilwoman Lutherine Williams
Goal: Applaud the reinstatement of a police chief who was unjustly fired by a homophobic mayor
Residents of a small town in South Carolina have taken a stand against homophobia. In April 2014, Police Chief Crystal Moore was abruptly fired after serving the town of Latta for two decades. Chief Moore was at odds with Mayor Earl Bullard, who made negative public statements about her sexuality. Latta residents recently voted to impose a strong council form of government for their town, which limits the mayor’s unilateral power. The City Council has supported Chief Moore along the way and Councilwoman Lutherine Willias has led the efforts to reinstate her. Thank her for working to ensure that homophobia will not be tolerated in today’s society.
Moore’s firing gained national attention earlier this year. She received an outpouring of support from people across the United States and many petitions were filed on her behalf.
The 328-147 vote sent a strong message to Mayor Bullard, who fired Moore based on seven questionable reprimands. According to a local news report, residents were fed up with the mayor’s blatant discrimination. Bullard went on record with the local media, stating the following: “I would much rather have – and I will say this to anybody’s face – somebody who drank and drank too much taking care of my child than I had somebody whose lifestyle is questionable around children. … I’m not going to let two women stand up there and hold hands and let my child be aware of it. And I’m not going to see them do it with two men neither.”
The vote strips the mayor of most of his powers and places them into the hands of the City Council. The Council has strongly supported Moore every step of the way and has reinstated her as Police Chief. Let Councilwoman Williams know that you applaud her efforts to ensure that homophobia will not be tolerated in today’s society.
Dear Councilwoman Williams,
Thank you for your support of Police Chief Crystal Moore. I applaud your efforts to ensure that she was rightly reinstated to her position.
The recent vote by the residents of Latta and the Town Council’s efforts show that homophobia will not be tolerated in today’s society. Mayor Bullard’s actions are deplorable and he should be held accountable for his discriminatory behavior.
