Target: LeVar Burton
Goal: Thank actor for supporting child literacy for over two decades
Many know LeVar Burton as the host of “Reading Rainbow,” a children’s show geared to encourage children to read during the summer months. The show has inspired thousands of children to read and even though it has been taken off the air, many adults still remember the theme song and the show’s important message. Burton still continues to devote his time and energy to child literacy, and his devotion for this cause should be applauded.
Realizing that one of the best ways to reach children is through digital media, Burton launched a Kickstarter campaign to create a web version of the popular “Reading Rainbow” tablet app. The actor hoped to raise $1 million, and to his astonishment, reached the goal within 11 hours. The Kickstarter has now amassed $5.4 million from more than 105,000 donators, including several celebrities.
“Reading Rainbow” began airing on public television in 1983, urging kicks to “take a look” in a book during the summer months. The show continued to air until 2009, but actor LeVar Burton’s commitment to child literacy continued, and his devotion was channeled into this new project. While the website will be a paid subscription, the actor has promised to make the website free to disadvantaged classrooms and hopes it will prove to be a useful tool for teachers everywhere.
This actor should be thanked for his commitment to child literacy, as many children and adolescents do not spend enough time reading. Literacy is the foundation of our society, and instead of treating reading as a chore, it should be fun and stimulating. Thank LeVar Burton for his contribution and continued dedication to child literacy.
Dear Mr. Burton,
Your continued dedication toward child literacy is extremely touching, and I am writing this letter to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I realize that many children and adolescents do not read as much as they used to, and I hope your new website and tablet app will encourage children to pick up a book. This activity has brought happiness to many adults and children, and I hope every generation gets to experience it themselves.
While I am saddened that “Reading Rainbow” will not be airing, many adults still remember the show. It has definitely touched thousands of lives and encouraged hundreds more to “take a look in a book.” Please continue to make a positive impact on our national community. Once again, I sincerely thank you for your contributions to children’s education.
