Target: Principal Jesse Smith
Goal: Chastise South Williamsport High School for refusing to show musical with same-sex marriage scene
Some schools are still stuck in the past, discriminating against LGBT communities. One school has actually banned the showing of a Monty Python musical that the students were performing, claiming that it isn’t appropriate for a school setting because it has a same-sex marriage scene. The principal’s statements show his discriminatory attitude towards the LGBT communities and hostility towards any groups that don’t conform to his school’s traditional standards.
One school in northern Pennsylvania has thrown itself back in time by discriminating against same-sex marriage by banning Monty Python’s Spamalot from being performed at the school because of a scene with same-sex marriage. The students of a neighboring school, however, have a school-sanctioned GSA club and have numerous openly gay students. Despite this, Principal Smith still sees pro-LGBT scenes and images as inappropriate for school age kids. According to ThinkProgress.org, he even went so far as to say that there are no gay people in the town’s community, which is ludicrous and hurtful towards any LGBT students or non-students. The head of the drama department even expressed her displeasure at Principal Smith’s revocation of allowing Monty Python’s Spamalot to be performed.
Admonish Principal Jesse Smith for his discriminatory comments and revocation of a play that contains a scene with a same-sex marriage. His prejudiced attitude can potentially be very dangerous and mentally distressing for any LGBT students attending South Williamsport High School.
Dear Principal Smith,
I recently read about a decision of yours involving your school’s musical. I read that you did not allow Monty Python’s Spamalot to be performed for the sole reason that the musical contained a same-sex marriage scene. This is blatant discrimination against the LGBT community. You are saying that love and marriage are not human rights . By declaring that there are no LGBT-identifying individuals in your town, you alienate a minority of students who may suffer psychological issues for not being accepted by their very school leaders.
Many other high schools have shown the Spamalot musical, showing that it is indeed appropriate for students to participate in and perform. Same-sex marriage is legal in Pennsylvania. Marriages between two people are wholly suitable for young students because they show love and peace, and not violence. In addition, some students of South Williamsport High School may feel threatened by your prejudiced comments against a play with which they may identify.
Please rescind your derogatory comments towards the LGBT community immediately.
