Target: Mayor of Tuam, Ireland, Mary Loftus
Goal: Demand that women’s home is held accountable for hundreds of illegally buried babies
St. Mary’s Mother and Baby Home was a home for pregnant women and young mothers and their children in Tuam, Ireland from 1925 to 1961. During those years, 796 children died at a much higher rate than the national average inside the walls of the home, and their bodies were disposed of in a mysterious manner. There is no record of where the children were buried except for one solitary burial certificate, and the only likely place is a septic tank behind the home.
Historian Catherine Corless is convinced that these children are buried in this septic tank, and her theory has been corroborated by local people who had reportedly seen babies’ bones in the area in the years when the home was in operation. Corless is campaigning for the children’s burial site to be acknowledged and respected, wherever that burial site may happen to be situated.
Many of the children in these homes suffered cruel and unusual treatment, according to survivors. It is not surprising that the death rate was so much higher inside of the home than outside of it, and it might explain some of the resistance by the archbishop of Tuam to investigate further into these unmarked graves.
Please sign this petition to demand an investigation into the deaths of these children and the abuse they suffered while living at the St. Mary’s Mother and Baby Home. We must right our wrongs and respect the short lives of these long-deceased children.
Dear Mayor Loftus,
I am writing to demand an investigation into the 796 children who are buried in unmarked graves on the St. Mary’s Mother and Baby Home property. These children were alienated in life, and now we are continuing to treat them as second-class citizens in death.
These children deserve a proper burial, burial records, and marked graves. Their deaths were horribly tragic, and at a rate higher than the national average, it is safe to say that many of the deaths were preventable.
Please open an investigation to uncover the mysteries surrounding the deaths of these children and give them the respect they deserve.
