Target: Chief Conservator of Forests Mangrove Cell, N. Vasudevan
Goal: Stop the illegal mining of sand from destroying natural habitats
Near the mangroves belt of Dahisar, Mumbai, illegal sand mining has become rampant. Over the past four years, the mangroves have been slowly destroyed as large quantities of sand is extracted by suction pumps. Authorities refuse to acknowledge the seriousness of this issue and take action. If this illegal sand mining continues, the mangrove habitat will be wiped out completely.
Sand is a key component for constructing new buildings, but at what cost? The sand mining negatively affects the plant and animal species that are dependent on the mangroves. The removal of the sand not only impacts the global bird population that annually migrates to these habitats, but it also destroys the breeding grounds of marine life, such as crabs and fish.
Swift action must be taken in order to preserve the mangrove habitat that numerous wildlife are dependent upon. It has been four years since the mining began and the authorities still have not taken steps to cease the illegal mining. Sign this petition and urge the Chief Conservator of Forests Mangrove Cell to stop illegal sand mining and protect the mangroves.
Dear Mr. Vasudevan,
It has come to my attention that illegal sand mining continues to slowly destroy the mangroves in Dahisar, Mumbai. Trucks come in every day and remove great quantities of sand using suction pumps. Although the sand is a key component for constructing new buildings, illegal mining of the sand causes adverse effects on the local environment.
I hope you understand that many plant and animal species depend on the mangrove habitat in order to survive and thrive. The removal of the sand not only impacts global bird populations that migrate to the area every year, but it also affects crabs, fish, and other marine life. If illegal sand mining is allowed to continue, this habitat will be completely destroyed.
Wild habitats are being destroyed every day to meet the high demand of natural resources. However, you have the opportunity to take action and halt the destruction of mangroves. The wildlife species currently living in the mangroves depend on you to save and protect the habitat they require to survive. I urge you to do everything possible to stop the destruction of the mangroves.
