Target: Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and host of Cosmos
Goal: Encourage and commend the spread of science-based facts to alert the public about global warming
Severe atmospheric change is affecting the earth and its inhabitants every minute. A too-high concentration of CO2 is warming the earth, causing mass melting of the glaciers and intense global storms, as well as a decline in the health of flora and fauna across the globe. The main issue is, surprisingly, not that these issues are occurring, but rather that citizens of the world are not grasping, or are avoiding the severity of the issue. The television show Cosmos boldly professes the truth about global warming: people are a major player in the disastrous atmospheric changes, and people must act to change the course of the future.
The second to last episode, or episode 12 of season one of Cosmos, presents all aspects of global warming in an easy-to-understand manner. Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, the current host of Cosmos, explains how the warming issue started, what the earth was like before the industrial revolution and where the current warming trend will leave the earth in a few decades. Tyson explains the many different scientific methods utilized to reach the current conclusion that the earth is in trouble, and humans are largely to blame. He leaves no room for doubt and in fact ensures viewers that denial of global warming is irrelevant; the earth is warming, humans are a cause and humans need to work together in order to salvage the Earth.
It is not every day that a scientist, or in this case an astrophysicist, is able to effectively translate scientific jargon into easily understood concepts. People with no basis in science whatsoever will likely have no problem understanding science the way Tyson delivers it. This gift, Tyson’s ability to speak to everyone, is highly important for the scientific community. Earth’s people must be informed about the state of their home and held aware of lifestyle impacts. Commend Tyson and Cosmos for presenting necessary information and boldly acknowledging global warming on public television.
Dear Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson,
I am writing to commend and thank you for your terrific work as the host of Cosmos. I especially wish to commend you for episode 12 of season one, titled The World Set Free. You have a wonderful talent for transforming complex science into easy-to-understand concepts, and this episode was no exception. The earth is undergoing severe atmospheric change due to the activities of humans. Your bold presentation of these issues is necessary; too many people choose to ignore science, when the issue desperately needs to be addressed.
Your influence to public television is priceless. It is my hope that many hear your message and heed the earth’s warnings. Humans must bind together to create change; you have relayed this message flawlessly.
Thank you for all that you do for the earth.
