Target: Angela Tagtow, Head of Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion
Goal: Thank Angela Tagtow for publicly advocating eating less meat in the interest of sustainability
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recently made a very influential change in staff. Angela Tagtow advocates sustainability and eating healthful foods for optimum health, and is very open about her beliefs. Now, Tagtow holds an extremely influential platform within the USDA, as Head of the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. Many of Tagtow’s new colleagues disagree with her support of a low-meat intake diet, but this does not stop her from encouraging sustainability over egregious factory farming.
Tagtow is not intimidated by the past food pyramids and advocacy of the USDA. For many years the USDA has based its daily food recommendations on nutrition importance as well as influence from special interest groups, rather than climate or sustainability impact of the suggested food options. The revised USDA recommended nutritional guidelines will be released next year (revised guidelines are released every five years). With Tagtow’s influence, the new recommended guidelines will focus on climate change and sustainability impact of food, therefore advocating food with low impact. This is a huge change within the USDA, as the government program has intense ties with the meat and dairy industries, which are unhealthy operations for the future of the planet.
The revised USDA food recommendations will focus on sustainability, animal welfare, community wealth and health. These much needed changes will be spearheaded by Tagtow, who believes that food and nutrition should fulfill the needs of eaters now and in the future. Tagtow’s viewpoint is a game-changing, life-saving phenomenon, and she will likely be an intensely positive influence within the USDA. Applaud Tagtow for her compassionate approach to humans, animals and the planet, and commend her for standing up for her beliefs despite opposition from colleagues.
Dear Angela Tagtow,
Congratulations on your recent appointment to the Head of the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. The USDA is very fortunate to have your presence, though many of your new colleagues do not agree with this sentiment. I strongly believe that your head and heart are in the right place: You strive to advocate food that is good for eaters today and in the future, and for this, I thank you.
As you know, the meat and dairy industries are not advocates of sustainability. On the contrary, they may be the cause for the earth’s demise if they are not properly phased out. The earth, animals and people need compassion, sustainable food growth and promotion, and healthy food, rich in nutrients and full of good intention. Thank you for understanding the importance of fostering a healthy future. I applaud you and support you in your new position.
