Target: Prime Minister of Spain, Mariano Rajoy Brey
Goal: Implement stricter animal safety laws to save rabbits in captivity from unthinkable cruelty
An international animal advocacy organization infiltrated Spain’s rabbit industry over the past two years. What the organization discovered is horrifying: baby rabbits thrown in the trash, filthy and cramped cages, open wounds and infections, broken bones, and cruel deaths. These actions were found in every single one of the 72 farms and four slaughterhouses that were investigated. It is astonishing that this cruel behavior is everyday practice on rabbit farms. For the sake of these animals, this cruelty must not be allowed to continue.
When rabbits reach a certain weight, they are sent to the slaughterhouses. Until they grow large enough for slaughter, the rabbits are kept in undersized cages and receive little to no care. International animal advocacy organization, Animal Equality, filmed rabbits with open wounds, swollen faces, and broken paws. As if this weren’t enough, there were even veterinarians filmed who showed complete disdain for these innocent creatures, going as far as to join in on killing the rabbits by smashing them to death on the floor.
Rabbits that live long enough to make it to the slaughterhouse face an equally horrific end. Traveling without food or water, the rabbits are deposited like any other shipment of goods for sale. They are then strung upside down via a conveyer system where they shake with terror, trying to break free, until they are stunned and their throats are slit.
While it may not come as a surprise that animals raised for slaughter are incredibly mistreated, it is still shocking to witness the undercover video evidence. This heartless behavior has no place in a modern society comprised of evolving, intelligent civilizations, yet the abuse still persists.
The animal industry desperately needs to be told that this inhumane treatment of rabbits is not acceptable. Sign this petition to tell the Spanish Prime Minister that living creatures do not deserve to be treated as filth, their only value found in how cheaply they can be slaughtered for human consumption.
Dear Prime Minister Brey,
I recently read the reports concerning Animal Equality’s investigations of 72 farms and four slaughterhouses across Spain. What the organization discovered is shocking and upsetting. Undercover video revealed rabbits with severely swollen faces, broken paws, open wounds, and infections. The footage also showed bunnies being thrown carelessly into the trash, along with other dying or dead rabbits, some of which were killed by being smashed against the ground.
Frankly, this abuse is disgusting. Spain is far too advanced to still mistreat animals this way. For the sake of these innocent creatures, I urge you to implement stricter animal safety laws as soon as possible.
