Target: Reverend Randy Bush, Co-Moderator of Covenant Network
Goal: Praise Presbyterian Church for supporting marriage equality for LGBT individuals
The support of LGBT rights by the Presbyterian denomination is nothing short of a miracle, as the 1.76 million-member Presbyterian Church (USA) voted to change the definition of marriage as being between “two people.” With 429 leaders in support (175 members opposing) of gay marriage, Presbyterian pastors are also allowed to officiate same-sex ceremonies in states where gay marriage is legal.
With more than 10,000 churches across the United States, the Presbyterian denomination, especially pro-LGBT church groups like the Covenant Network, have been fighting for full LGBT inclusion for decades. Although the decision could take up to a year to become official, reverends, pastors, and other Presbyteries have expressed great optimism as other denominations follow suit by shedding bigotry and embracing equality. The Episcopal Church has allowed same-sex blessings and ceremonies for years, while the United Church of Christ has been in support of gay marriage since 2005. Even further, the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations has openly supported same-sex marriage, unions, and LGBT rights since 1996.
After years of intense debate and discussion about the meaning of marriage in the church, the Presbyterian denomination and its many members have recognized the changing tide of our times and acknowledged the overwhelming support for religious civil unions and same-sex marriages across the nation. The Presbyterian church has even allowed the ordination of openly gay men and women in same-sex relationships, as well as openly gay clergy members—a move that only adds to the progressiveness and egalitarianism of today’s social landscape.
As the Presbyterian church’s increasingly liberal views on gay issues continue to flourish, this historic decision deserves to be applauded. Sign the petition to support the efforts of the Presbyterian denomination and thank Reverend Randy Bush of Covenant Network for his unwavering advocacy.
Dear Reverend Bush,
It has recently come to my attention that the Presbyterian denomination seeks to redefine what marriage means, against increasing scrutiny, in an effort to be progressive, inclusive and supportive of LGBT rights and same-sex marriage. As an LGBT supporter and activist, I applaud your efforts and commend your unwavering advocacy. In the face of adversity, you, and the Presbyterian church, have shown unmatched championship for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered individuals across the nation. And for that, I applaud the Presbyterian Church’s efforts.
To change the denomination’s Book of Order to redefine marriage as being between “two people,” instead of just between “a man and a woman,” is a historic development in the fight for equal rights. I am glad that you and the countless members of the Presbyterian denomination have finally embraced empathy and respected the change in scope of our current social climate.
Thank you for your efforts.
