Target: Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe
Goal: Expand Medicaid to cover thousands of poor Virginians
Poverty-stricken citizens of Virginia had hope for optimism recently, as Governor McAuliffe indicated that he would expand Medicaid in his state. Such an event would make health insurance available to an estimated 400,000 poor Virginians. However, the governor’s administration has backed away from this plan, now saying that Medicaid expansion is only one of a number of options on the table. The move to expand Medicaid is opposed by the right-wing-dominated Virginia legislature, though the governor said he would act on his own.
Under a provision of the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare), states can opt in to an expansion of Medicaid, the social health care program for people with low incomes. This expansion drastically increases the number of uninsured people that Medicaid can cover. Virginia has not yet expanded Medicaid because of disagreement between liberals and conservatives in state government over whether such an action is appropriate. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of Virginians go without health insurance and cannot pay for healthcare. Governor McAuliffe has worked to expand Medicaid in the past, and on June 20th, 2014 he claimed that he would do so through executive action, denying the state legislature the chance to block the move.
The governor’s office is now downplaying the significance of his statements, and there is renewed doubt that Medicaid expansion will occur. By signing this petition, you will call upon Governor McAuliffe to be true to his word and expand Medicaid for Virginia.
Dear Governor McAuliffe,
Thousands of Virginians are currently without health insurance, and an expansion of Medicaid can help them. You have fought long and hard to help these people gain coverage, and recently there was cause for celebration as you announced your intention to expand Medicaid unilaterally. But the very next day your Administration seemed to back away from such a move, saying that the expansion was one of a number of options under consideration.
An expansion of Medicaid is the best way to give health insurance to an estimated 400,000 Virginians. There is no need to consider other options when you have already identified the best way of achieving your goal. Please renew your dedication to expanding Medicaid through executive action and bring hope to the uninsured of your state.
