Target: Wu Aiying, Minister of Justice
Goal: Release anti-corruption activists from prion in China
The Chinese government must immediately release three anti-corruption activists who have been thrown in jail for practicing their freedom of expression and assembly. Two activists, Liu Ping and Wei Zhongping, were sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison while the third, Li Sihua, was given a three-year sentence. All three were charged with ‘picking quarrels and creating a disturbance.’ Liu Ping and Wei Zhongping were additionally charged with ‘using an evil cult to undermine law enforcement.’ These charges are not legal under international law and violate the protester’s human rights.
These activists were arrested for demanding that high-ranking government officials publicly declare their financial and property interests. The protesters were part of the New Citizens Movement, which is focused on promoting government transparency and exposing corruption. The Chinese government has come down hard against the movement, arresting many of the leaders of the group and banning them from protesting.
Liu Ping was allegedly tortured while in custody waiting for trial. In addition, her daughter and her mother were not allowed to see her at any point during the trial. The treatment of prisoners of conscience by the Chinese government is atrocious. The government must allow members of the New Citizens Movement to express their views however they wish. It is an important message that needs to be heard. Sign this petition to call on the Chinese government to immediately and unconditionally release these innocent protesters.
Dear Minister Wu Aiying,
The recent arrest of three members of the New Citizens Movement is troubling. Their only crime was practicing their freedom of expression and assembly. I ask that you respect their basic human rights and immediately and unconditionally release them. Doing so would show the international community that you are serious about respecting international human rights law.
I also ask that you open an investigation into allegations of torture committed against members of the New Citizens movement who are in custody. Those who are found to be responsible should be tried according to international regulations. Your government must do more to protect those in its custody, especially when they should not be there in the first place.
