Target: Congressman Joe Pitts, Chairperson of the House Subcommittee on Health
Goal: Stop exposing citizens to a commonly used poison in drinking water
Fluoridated drinking water is all too common in the United States, and repetitively exposes citizens to a harmful chemical used as a commercial pest killer. In 1945, when fluoride was first added to drinking water, the intention was to prevent dental caries, however in today’s advanced age of dental health and with more information on the nutritional needs of humans, it is clear that fluoride is not essential to the proper function of the human body, nor is it necessary to consume the chemical in order to strengthen teeth. Exposure to fluoride has been linked to such ailments as bone disease, arthritis, gastrointestinal problems, thyroid disease, dental fluorosis, and potentially cardiovascular disease as well as several types of cancer. It is necessary to put an end to water fluoridation in the United States in order to protect the long term health of its citizens
The United States is one of few Western nations that continues to add unnecessary fluoride to its water supply. The Center for Disease Control’s 2010 data on water fluoridation indicates that 66.2% of the U.S. population is dependent on fluoridated drinking water systems. At the same time, fluoride is used commercially as a pesticide and rodent killer and the Food and Drug Administration mandates that toothpaste containing fluoride display a poison warning with instructions to call the poison control center if consumed in amounts higher than recommended. How can daily exposure to a commercial poison and added chemical be accepted and enforced in one of the most developed countries in the world?
People who eat cereal, drink pop, beer, or juice, or consume other processed foods are also exposed to fluoride due to the use of fluoridated water in the production and manufacture of packaged foods. Help end the fluoridation of water in the United States, and stop a practice that is both unnecessary and unhealthy for the population.
Dear Congressman Pitts,
As the chairperson of the house subcommittee on health, it is imperative that you understand and work to change the current practice of fluoridating the drinking water of U.S. citizens. Fluoridated drinking water directly reaches 66.2% of citizens, as indicated by the 2010 CDC data on water fluoridation, but it has an even wider scope as fluoridated water is also used in the production and processing of packaged foods and drinks. At the same time, fluoride is used as a commercial pest killer for rat poisons and pesticides. As a gaseous by-product of the commercial production of fertilizer, the fluoride added to water also exposes citizens to non-pharmaceutical-grade chemicals.
Research and advancements in medical and dental health have shown that fluoride is not an essential nutrient nor is it imperative in the prevention of cavities. While it has been proven to strengthen teeth, it is certainly unnecessary to consume the chemical on a repetitive basis. Such ailments as bone disease, arthritis, gastrointestinal problems, thyroid disease, dental fluorosis, and potentially cardiovascular disease as well as several types of cancer are linked to repetitive exposure to fluoride
I ask you to stop the unnecessary fluoridation of U.S. drinking water and end the repetitive exposure of citizens to a dangerous chemical.
