Support Innovative Ocean Cleaning Technology

Target: Boyan Slat, Founder & President of The Ocean Cleanup Array

Goal: Commend Boyan Slat for developing an efficient way to keep oceans clean

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), millions of tons of plastic products have entered the ocean and made living conditions toxic for local species. Thousands of marine mammals and birds die every year because they mistakenly eat plastic products that are carelessly disposed of into the ocean.

This alone is depressing. However, two years ago Boyan Slat came up with a way to clean the oceans that he believed would minimize casualties for both the ocean and the vast number of species that call the ocean home. After taking two years to complete studies to see if his idea could actually work in practice, the design has been deemed successful and extremely efficient in cleaning up plastic products that end up on the ocean floor.

Slat’s design works because it incorporates the natural rhythms of the ocean. Slat proposes that attaching multiple floating barriers, which he also refers to as booms, to the bottom of the ocean will allow the trash to be collected in one place first, making it that much easier to transport it out of the ocean. The design does not include any nets so accidental catching of fish is basically impossible, and according to the results of the feasibility study, 80% of plastic that comes in contact with the booms will be captured.

The next step for Slat and the Ocean Cleanup Array project is getting the word out there and raising money to do more large-scale testing. Slat needs to raise around 2 million dollars to make his dream a reality. Help us thank Slat for his hard work whilst raising awareness by signing the petition below.

Dear Mr. Slat,

Thank you for your hard work and dedication these past two years in developing an incredibly efficient way of cleaning our oceans. Oceans are an important natural resource as well as home to millions of sea creatures that need our help to continue to survive, and we thank you for your strong efforts in attempting to keep oceans productive and thriving.

We wish you the best of luck in raising the money to continue to refine your unique method of cleaning up the oceans. This will not be an easy task, but we hope this petition will help spread awareness and bring you one step closer to your goal.
