Target: United States President Barack Obama
Goal: Praise the President for his plan to preserve our oceans
Our Ocean Conference is a summit where delegates from countries and organizations around the world gather to discuss the state of our oceans and how to best protect them. Recently this summit concluded with a $1 billion pledge to support preservation efforts. The oceans produce 50% of our oxygen and are home to a vast array of marine wildlife, making conservation a top priority. President Obama has already committed to conserving our oceans for future generations with a detailed plan of action.
President Obama participated in the conference and discussed sustainable fishing, marine pollution and ocean acidification. During the summit President Obama announced plans to create and expand upon marine reserves in the Pacific Ocean. The nation of Kiribati also announced that it will expand on its own protected islands and ban commercial fishing. If this plan comes to fruition, it will double the amount of legally protected oceans.
Serious concerns have been raised about threats like overfishing and the acidification of ocean waters. Scientists have found evidence of shells deteriorating in certain shellfish because of the oceans’ increasing acidity. Even more alarming, The World Wildlife Fund reports that over 30% of our world’s fisheries are either fully or over-exploited. If this pillage continues the consequences will be dire and possibly irreversible.
In response to this crisis President Obama announced a new program aimed at allowing customers to trace where their seafood comes from and to verify that fish have been harvested legally and sustainably. The United States will also begin a new program called “mFish” which provides small-scale fisheries around the world information about the weather and current markets.
Praise the President for his commitment to our oceans, as their conservation is crucial to the survival of humans as well as wildlife.
Dear President Obama,
I am writing to praise your commitment to our oceans. Marine habitats are in great peril because of human activity. Many environmentalists have been pushing for decades to improve conservation and sustainable fishing practices, and it is heartening to see national leaders finally acting to address this crisis.
Please ensure that no further harm comes to our imperiled oceans. They produce 50% of our oxygen, absorb excess carbon dioxide and provide sustenance and income for millions of people. The oceans are also home to a plethora of marine wildlife, and despite scouring space for new planets we humans still know very little about our oceans.
Thank you again for your commitment to expanding marine sanctuaries and to advancing other programs aimed at ocean conservation. Please keep the health and sustainability of our environment in mind in all your future decisions.
