Commend Creation of World’s Largest Marine Sanctuary

Target: United States President Barack Obama

Goal: Commend President Obama for taking significant action to protect our oceans

President Obama recently used his executive authority to propose creation of the world’s largest marine sanctuary. Thanks to his efforts a large area of the Pacific Ocean will be protected from commercial fishing, mining and oil exploration. This is a big win for our oceans, which have faced constant threats from overfishing, oil spills and mining activities.

“Like Presidents Clinton and Bush before me I am going to use my authority as president to protect some of our most precious marine landscapes,” Obama explained, “just like we do for mountains and rivers and forests.” Around 800,000 square miles in the south-central Pacific Ocean are set to be protected by the new sanctuary, effective at the end of 2014 after a lengthy comment period. President Obama’s decision was prompted by the failure of Congress to take action to protect the oceans.

The President has also instituted a task force to crack down on the illegally-obtained seafood currently sold in U.S. markets. The task force would like to stop all pirate fishing operations by the end of 2014. Many marine species have been pushed to the brink of extinction due to overfishing. According to a report from The Guardian as many as one in five fish caught is illegally harvested.

Thanks to President Obama’s outstanding commitment the world’s largest marine preserve will be a haven where diverse species can recover from overfishing and habitat degradation. His proposed task force will help to stop illegal fishing operations from damaging endangered fish stocks already teetering on the verge of collapse. Commend President Obama for using his authority to protect our oceans.

Dear President Obama,

I recently learned about your intention to establish the world’s largest marine sanctuary and to create a task force to crack down on illegal fishing. Our oceans are a resource and treasure shared by the world and need to be protected as such. The dangers posed by overfishing and climate change, and the environmental degradation caused by oil drilling and mining, are enormous. This is why the creation of marine sanctuaries is so vital to help maintain ocean habitat.

Thank you for taking these bold and necessary actions to preserve our oceans. Please see through with your commitment and ensure creation of this precious marine sanctuary.
