Target: Kevin Yost, President of Earthbound Farm
Goal: Use less plastic in product packaging and switch to biodegradable materials
Earthbound Farm is a supplier of organic produce that is widely available in supermarkets around the United States. This company is quickly becoming a recognized brand and makes organic produce available to many consumers. However, the company’s overuse of plastic packaging in many of these products is unacceptable and unattractive to environmentally conscious consumers. The company’s packaging does contain recycled content, but the environmental impact would be greatly reduced if it switched to biodegradable packaging and reduced its overall use of plastics.
Although Earthbound Farm uses plastic packaging with recycled content, plastic is still a major problem in the environment. Approximately one-third of municipal waste in the U.S. is comprised of discarded packaging and many of these plastics may use chemicals that are harmful to human health. Recycled plastics are weaker than they were in their initial form and often this requires additional harmful chemicals to be added in order to reuse plastic. Recycled plastic cannot often be re-recycled, which means that all the plastic from Earthbound Farm customers most likely goes to a landfill.
Simply delaying packaging’s ultimate arrival at dump is no significant environmental accomplishment. Earthbound Farm serves a large customer base and has an opportunity to truly reduce its environmental impact through adopting a biodegradable packaging alternative. Urge Earthbound Farm to stop polluting the environment by switching to biodegradable packaging.
Dear Mr. Yost,
Earthbound Farm makes organic products widely available to conscious consumers who wish to buy food made without use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides or genetically modified ingredients. This is an important service that your company provides to the country. However, many of Earthbound Farm’s products make excessive use of non-biodegradable plastic packaging. The brand’s overuse of plastic packaging is counterintuitive to the environmental and health motivations behind purchasing organic products and we the consumers request that you use less plastic material in the packaging of your products and switch to biodegradable alternative.
Example Earthbound Farm products that use an inappropriate amount of packaging include salad greens, which come in a plastic bag inside of a large, bulky plastic container, and pre-sliced fruits and vegetables, which come individually wrapped in plastic inside of a larger plastic container. This excessive use of non-biodegradable plastic is inappropriate in an organic brand that people purchase in consideration of the environment. A move to less packaging overall as well as use of biodegradable materials would set Earthbound Farm apart from competing organic products and would be greatly appreciated by customers.
