Applaud Court’s Decision to Lower Pollution Levels

Target: Judge Renato Nalini of the Court of State of São Paulo

Goal: Applaud the court’s call for reductions in dangerously high levels of electromagnetic pollution

Recently the Court of State of São Paulo issued a decision to increase pollution regulation standards in the city. The new standards would reduce electromagnetic pollution from power lines to levels considered safe for human health.

Electromagnetic pollution from the power lines cutting through São Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, is currently ten times higher than the new standards set by the court. This has raised serious health concerns for the area’s inhabitants, and two associations of residents in São Paulo were compelled to bring the matter before the court. Judge Renato Nalini, who is familiar with research on protection of the environment, said the decision was necessary because of the likelihood that exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields can increase the risk of cancer in humans.

The court’s decision was based on provisions of the Brazilian Federal Constitution dealing with protection of a healthy environment, as well as principles contained in the Rio Summit. The Rio Summit similarly aims to protect against threats to human health and the environment. Other international courts have already taken action to address electromagnetic pollution levels, based on a large body of research on the potential for its harmful effects.

Although this commitment to reducing pollution levels has passed the local court, the Supreme Court has yet to review the case. Applaud the Court of State of São Paulo’s decision to lower electromagnetic pollution levels and urge its support in advancing the case before the Supreme Court.

Dear Justice Nalini,

The Court of State of São Paulo’s decision to reduce electromagnetic pollution levels in the city is quite admirable. Levels of electromagnetic pollution in São Paulo are ten times higher than the new, court-ordered standards. You and the other justices took time to examine evidence from international scientists and concluded that action was clearly needed to protect São Paulo’s residents.

I look forward to hearing about the continuation of this case in the Supreme Court, and of the positive changes in the environment that are to result from this action. Thank you for assisting in the preservation of the population’s health. Please urge for the case to be seen before the highest court to ensure the health and wellbeing of all Brazilians.
