Applaud Starbucks for Offering Workers a Free Education

Target: Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz

Goal: Thank Starbucks for providing its employees with the opportunity to receive a free college education

Recently, Starbucks made the proactive and wise decision to provide free college courses to its workers. The corporation has partnered with Arizona State University to offer a free online education to all of its employees who work a minimum of 20 hours a week. The amount of free tuition granted is also dependent on the employee’s current student status. Starbucks is a major corporation with thousands of retail employees, and offering a free college education to those employees is monumental and deserves recognition.

Continuing education after high school is not a fit for every person. However, higher education offers individuals many beneficial skills and often plays a major role in the quality of work an individual may be qualified to acquire after high school. Starbucks is offering free higher education based upon employees’ prior college education. If the employee has at least two years of college credit, the company will pay their full tuition. For employees with less than two year’s worth of credit, Starbucks will pay part of the cost. However, when combined with grants and scholarship opportunities, university will likely be completely free for students in the latter category as well.

Starbucks has said that, unlike many companies that offer higher education, it does not require its employees to continue working with the company. The corporation understands that betterment through education is more important that solidifying employee loyalty. Applaud Starbucks for providing its employees a chance to finish, continue or start an online education at Arizona State University.

Dear Mr. Schultz,

I am writing to applaud Starbucks for understanding the importance of higher education. Your corporation now offers students a chance to study online with Arizona State University, free of charge. I want to especially mention the sincerity and selflessness Starbucks has held with this decision by not requiring employees stay longer with the company in order to receive the education. It is evident that Starbucks values education, as well as improving the lives of its employees.

Thank you for making a college education more attainable by offering this valuable opportunity to your employees.
