Target: Diego Benito, Reserve Manager
Goal: Praise man for managing an innovative wilderness reserve
In La Alamedilla, Spain, a 1,200-acre span of land which used to be unusable cattle farmland five years ago has been converted into a thriving wildlife reserve. This reserve, named Campanarios de Azaba Biological Reserve, is just one of the many new reserves being created all throughout Europe in a new movement of “rewilding,” or converting vast stretches of unused farmland into wildlife reserves to promote biodiversity.
The goal of these reserves is not only to preserve the species that are disappearing in Europe, but also to reintroduce animal species that have become naturally non-existent in Europe. Some of the more ambitious proponents of this movement idealize the recreation of ecosystems that have not been existent for 10,000 years, and seek to bring back animals such as lions and rhinoceros to Europe.
The Campanarios de Azaba Biological Reserve was made possible through the help of many supporters, including ARK Nature, WWF Netherlands, and Wild Wonders of Europe. The proponents of this reserve hope that with all the support they get for the reserve, biodiversity will be increased in the area. They maintain that change will be gradual, but will definitely occur.
The rapid extinction of animal species is inevitable due to the destructive nature of human inhabitance on earth. However, the process can be slowed down or even halted with the creation of nature reserves and reintroduction of animal species to create biodiversity. Please sign the petition below to praise and to support the creation of a means to increase this vital biodiversity.
Dear Diego Benito,
It was heartening to read about the creation of the wilderness reserve, Campanarios de Azaba Biological Reserve, which you manage. The movement of converting unused farmlands into wildlife reserves in Europe is indubitably a positive impact on the diversity of the environment. Especially given how destructive human ventures have been on the environment so far, movements such rewilding are vital for preserving the precious animal species that we have in existence.
Thank you for the great work you are contributing to the biodiversity of nature in Spain. Please keep up the great work. I look forward to reading about the great changes that result from this incredible movement.
