Remove Barriers to Selling Electric Cars

Target: Anthony Foxx, Secretary of Transportation

Goal: Allow electric cars to be sold directly to the consumer in New Jersey

Tesla Motors is a company that was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers from Silicon Valley. Lead by CEO Elon Musk, they set out to prove to the world that “electric cars could be awesome.” From their base in Palo Alto, California, they have managed to do just that. The Tesla Roadster made its premiere in 2008, and this sporty little coupe can travel for more than 250 miles per charge. The model S is a sedan that was premiered in 2012, can travel for up to 265 miles on one charge, and was even named Car of the Year.

Rather than using huge franchises or dealerships to sell their cars, Tesla Motors prefers to sell directly to the consumer. Unfortunately, that is where this young company has run into trouble. Larger car companies have directly attacked this form of selling, stating that it gives Tesla Motors an unfair advantage. New Jersey has already banned direct sales of Tesla Motors cars, and Missouri has some legislation in the works that is moving toward the same end.

Tesla Motors does not have an unfair advantage in the world of motor vehicles. Instead, the company is at a distinct disadvantage by entering as new competitor in a market that has been established for over 100 years. Sign this petition to give Tesla a fighting chance to bring electric cars into the mainstream and move us closer to a greener and more sustainable future.

Dear Anthony Foxx, Secretary of Transportation,

Tesla Motors is a start-up company that is trying to bring electric cars into the mainstream. Unfortunately, this collection of Silicon Valley engineers is being blocked at every turn. Instead of praising the company for its movement toward sustainable green energy, injunctions in multiple states are preventing the sale of these cars directly to consumers. Existing car manufacturers claim that being able to sell directly to the customer gives Tesla an unfair advantage.

That couldn’t be further from the truth. Quite the opposite, Tesla Motor is at a disadvantage because they are coming into the car manufacturing game more than a century after its inception. Instead of preventing these sales, we ask for an overturning of any existing legislation that bans the direct sale of Tesla Motor’s vehicles. With your help, we can make these cars as common as any with an internal combustion engine, and each do our part to help heal the planet.

  1. Unless electric cars can be charged by solar power then there is little benefit to the world.
