Target: Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John Boehner
Goal: Expand healthcare to millions of uninsured women and children
The HEAL Immigrant Women and Families Act widens options for health insurance for non-citizen immigrant women and children, allowing them access to preventative reproductive care, maternal care, and basic health treatment. If HEAL is passed, healthcare for millions of unprotected women and children will be granted. Just because families are uninsured does not mean they don’t need health care. HEAL will grant further access to basic healthcare, while saving future costs through preventative healthcare.
HEAL is an acronym for the “Health Equity and Access under the Law for Women and Immigrant Families Act.” It was introduced in the House by New Mexico Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham and intended to directly address the issue of millions of uninsured immigrants who have no access to affordable and dependable healthcare. Under HEAL, access to Medicaid would also be granted for lawful immigrants, without the five year delay currently required by law.
Additionally, the bill aims to widen the eligibility for marketplace insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and provide financial aid for healthcare to certain groups of immigrants—such as those who arrived in the U.S. as a child and who have a deferred action status.
Because millions of people living in the U.S. lack basic health care, HEAL is a bill that needs to pass. When basic healthcare is provided, costs resulting from major health problems, unplanned pregnancy, or emergency surgery can be prevented. By signing the petition below, you will add your voice to the call imploring Speaker of the House John Boehner to support the bill that will improve the lives of so many.
Dear Speaker Boehner,
Millions of non-citizen immigrants in the U.S. live without basic healthcare due to a lack of insurance. This number includes women, who depend on preventative reproductive healthcare to practice safe sex and plan pregnancies.
Supporting HEAL—the bill that promises to expand marketplace insurance options for certain immigrants—would greatly improve the quality of life for innumerable American residents. Not to mention, the costs related to emergency surgeries, preventable health conditions, and unplanned pregnancies could be greatly reduced.
I implore you to provide your support as Speaker of the House to this bill. The lives of women and children across the U.S. depend on it, regardless of any other immigration policies currently in action.
