Target: lululemon CEO Laurent Potdevin
Goal: Urge popular athletic apparel company to stop selling inhumane down jackets
Geese and ducks endure endless suffering at the hands of the down industry. Down, the delicate feathers closest to the bird’s skin, is often painfully plucked from geese and ducks while they are still alive. Other times, down is removed from the birds after they have been brutally slaughtered. Regardless of the point of removal, plucking down causes these gentle creatures unnecessary pain and suffering.
The popular yoga and athletic apparel company lululemon continues to sell down jackets although People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has been meeting with executives since 2011 to expose the terrible treatment that birds on down farms endure. PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman says, “Customers are horrified to discover that a ‘down’ label means that geese had their feathers painfully ripped out of their skin. PETA is calling on lululemon to stop dragging its feet, stop selling down, and agree never to sell it again.” PETA also points out that many times down feathers come from birds “who are force-fed by having tubes rammed down their throats” by the foie gras industry.
Live-plucking—tearing the feathers off of a living bird—of down is illegal in the United States and Europe, but the practice continues in China and other parts of the world. It is clear that the U.S. government finds live-plucking so appalling that it was declared to be against the law, so why is lululemon, a Canadian company that sells massive amounts of clothing in the States, being vague about the way that it sources its feathers?
Several synthetic fabrics exist that provide warmth and comfort to people without causing horrific pain to birds. We must demand that lululemon CEO Laurent Potdevin explore down alternatives and immediately stop selling cruel down jackets.
Dear Mr. Potdevin,
I was shocked to learn that lululemon is still selling down jackets although executives have been informed by PETA of the cruelty associated with the product. In order to produce down, ducks and geese are either killed before their feathers are removed or they remain alive and conscious as they endure the unimaginable pain of having their feathers ripped from their skin.
Many synthetic fabrics are available that can provide your customers with warmth and comfort without causing unnecessary pain or the death of innocent birds. I am asking you to please use your power and influence to stop selling down jackets at lululemon immediately.
