Target: London Mayor Boris Johnson
Goal: Demand wealthy London neighborhood remove inhumane spikes set up to deter homeless from sleeping outside
A luxury condominium in an affluent London neighborhood has installed vicious-looking spikes on the grounds around the building to deter the homeless from sleeping around the area. These spikes are not only an eyesore, but they send a callous and cruel message to London homeless.
Spikes, metal studs, and the like are methods of determent usually reserved for pigeons or rodents, or in other words, animals: not human beings. Members of the community claim that the spikes were installed about six weeks after a homeless man was witnessed sleeping on the ground outside the building. One of the residents said, “It’s almost obscene, I was really offended when I saw it myself.”
A spokesperson for Mayor Boris Johnson has said that he, “believes these spikes are ugly, self-defeating and stupid. Southwark Council are investigating, which is the right thing to do, but the Mayor is clear, the developer should see sense and remove the spikes immediately. There are far better ways to tackle rough sleeping on London’s streets.” The council is currently looking into whether it has the power to have the spikes removed.
Please sign this petition to urge Mayor Johnson to take action against these callous metal studs and have them removed from the condominium doorsteps, corners, and general grounds immediately.
Dear Mayor Johnson,
Recently an apartment complex in Southwark, London, installed metal spikes on its doorsteps, corners, and grounds in a callous attempt to deter homeless people from sleeping on the ground outside of the building. Instead of spending the money aiding the poor, these building managers have decided to make the environment as unwelcome as possible for human beings that have come upon hard times. These men are women are at their most vulnerable, and we should be offering them aid instead of treating them like a nuisance or a pest.
You have publicly stood against these spikes, and now is the time to take action. Please do everything in your power to swiftly and immediately have these metal studs removed from the grounds. I also encourage you to make a donation to the homeless shelters in a symbolic gesture of solidarity with London homeless.
