Target: CEO of Panera Bread, Ronald M. Shaich
Goal: Thank food chain Panera Bread for removing all artificial ingredients from its menu
Restaurant chain Panera Bread has recently announced its plans to remove all artificial food additives from its menu by 2016. This step toward food safety is a tremendous success for consumers and deserves high praise.
In an age where the risks of artificial ingredients are being meticulously studied and revealed, Panera Bread joined the recent trend of using all-natural ingredients and removing artificial additives from its menu. Other food companies such as Kraft, Subway, Chipotle and several others have rapidly been dropping ingredients that are perceived as risky by scientists and consumers. Among the eliminated ingredients will be artificial colors, flavorings, sweeteners, and preservatives.
Many recent studies have tied artificial ingredients, specifically food dyes, to behavior problems in children. The consumption of food dyes by children has more than tripled as compared to the 1950s, possibly a partial explanation for the corresponding increase in behavioral diagnoses in children. Several other artificial ingredients that have been studied have been linked to diseases and disorders such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
The food industry is now focusing on more natural ingredients to minimize health risks, a change that Panera Bread clearly supports. Kate Antonacci, Director of Societal Impact Initiatives at Panera Bread, stated, “We believe that removing artificial ingredients is where the world is headed and, frankly, we’ve always believed that simpler is better.”
Please sign the petition below to thank Panera Bread for making healthy decisions and removing artificial ingredients from its menu.
Dear Mr. Shaich,
Thank you for your recent decision to remove all artificial ingredients from the Panera Bread menu. Revelations about risks of artificial ingredients are on the rise in American society and these discoveries are calling for major reform to our food system. You are among the handful of companies that have recently taken the initiative to stress the importance of this reform.
Many studies have connected various types of artificial ingredients to diseases and disorders such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and many other issues. An example of this is the direct connection between artificial food dyes and behavioral issues in children. The consumption of food dyes by children has more than tripled as compared to the 1950s, possibly a partial explanation for the corresponding increase in behavioral diagnoses in children.
Your efforts to immediately remove harmful artificial colors, flavorings, sweeteners, and preservatives from Panera Bread’s menu will help improve the long-term well-being of your customers. Thank you for your health-conscious actions and I encourage you to continue to make similar improvements to your menu in the future.
