Target: Tanner Wendell Stewart
Goal: Applaud photographer for raising more than $50,000 for combating human trafficking
Recently, Seattle based photographer Tanner Wendell Stewart was recognized for raising more than $50,000 to donate to the A21 Campaign. The A21 Campaign, of which Stewart is a member, is a non-profit organization aimed to prevent human trafficking around the world.
Stewart’s life-changing moment in regards to how he viewed the prevalence of human trafficking occurred when he was visiting Bulgaria in 2012 as a volunteer of the A21 Campaign. Stewart was taking a photo of a man with his baby in the street, when the man asked Stewart whether he would like to buy the baby for $50. This disturbing encounter influenced Stewart to direct his photography taking skills to the human trafficking issue, and has since changed the course of his life.
Stewart gave up his current steady living condition in Seattle to drive over 10,000 miles over seven months in five different countries to shoot photographs for his Shoot the Skies book project. Through undertaking this project, Stewart was able to raise funds for his book and for donating to the A21 Campaign.
Human trafficking is a prevalent issue throughout the world. According to the A21 Campaign, around 27 million individuals are currently enslaved; the likelihood that an individual is saved from slavery is painfully low. Dear Tanner Wendell Stewart,
It was reassuring to read about the great sum of money that you have raised for the A21 Campaign to combat human trafficking around the world. The story about how you had first been truly exposed to a direct form of human trafficking was shocking to read, and understandably life-changing for you.
The innovative approach that you have taken to raise funds and awareness for the prevalence of human trafficking, in response to your first-hand experience with human trafficking, is truly inspiring. The photos you have captured throughout your journey in your Shoot the Skies book are wonderful to look through.
Thank you for the generous gift you have given to the A21 Campaign, and please keep up with the great work you are doing. I am looking forward to reading more about the work you turn out.
