Success: New Law Passed to Help End Greyhound Racing

Target: Iowa Governor Terry Branstad

Goal: Thank governor for passing legislation to help end greyhound racing into law

Iowa legislators recently proposed a measure that would shut down a major greyhound racing park and take millions of dollars in profits away from breeders who race their dogs. The measure received support from major animal welfare organizations, as well as this Force Change petition, because it will help end the cruelty of greyhound racing in Iowa completely. Thank Governor Terry Branstad for passing this humane legislation into law.

Senate File 2362 (S.F. 2362) will end greyhound racing at Bluffs Run Greyhound Park by the end of 2015 and take away about $14 million in annual slot machine subsidy payments from breeders racing their dogs at Dubuque Greyhound Park. While racing will continue at Dubuque, the end of subsidies will hinder the track’s ability to make a profit and lead to a reduction in the number of races, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Grey2K USA, a greyhound advocacy organization, stated they were confident S.F. 2362 will ultimately result in the failure of greyhound racing in Iowa in coming years.

Racing dogs endure a lifetime of confinement in cages and kennels and are usually only let out to be pushed to the point of physical exhaustion through constant training and racing. Many dogs suffer terrible injuries, sometimes fatal. Breeders heartlessly euthanize or discard their dogs when they can no longer make a profit, even if the injuries are treatable. Greyhounds deserve to live in a home with a family who loves them, like any other breed of dog, and S.F. 2362 has brought greyhounds a major step closer to a life without racing. Thank Governor Branstad for making the compassionate choice for greyhounds in his state and passing S.F. 2362 into law.

Dear Governor Branstad,

Thank you for your leadership in helping end the cruelty of greyhound racing in Iowa by signing S.F. 2362 into law. As you know, the measure will end racing at one track and take away millions of dollars in subsidies from breeders who race their dogs at another park, lowering their profits and reducing the number of races.

S.F. 2362 is a major step forward in ending greyhound racing in your state altogether in coming years. Like any dog breed, greyhounds deserve to spend their lives in homes with loving families, not locked in cages and pushed to the point of physical exhaustion, terrible injury and even death. I sincerely thank you for showing these amazing animals compassion by supporting this humane legislation.

Wonderful news. We need to end greyhound racing and horse racing worldwide.

Victory! That’s another great thing that I like to hear. Greyhounds no longer on the racetrack. Now they can be helped to find homes to live in and retire.

  3. Myrna Burdick says:

As a family who shares their life with a retired racer, we
applaud your efforts. Any time animals are used to entertain the lame-assed public they suffer emotionally and
physically. Our Dusty is an emotional wreck – she raced
in 103 races in the heat of Phoenix.
she is afraid of the wind and thunder, the door bell, some people, especially men. When she is frightened she only wants to be in a small, dark room.

I am concerned about what the breeders will do with their animals once the money stops coming in. Greyhound breeders are no better than puppy mills but they usually dispose of their dogs in ways that are not humane.
Please, lets try to get rescue groups in their to protect
    these wonderful dogs.

  5. I believe it would help to end both horse and greyhound racing, if new 75% taxes were imposed on every aspect of racing.
Put a 75% tax on a license fee for breeding and registering the animals. Add 75% sales tax to the cost of buying the animals. Take 75% of every bet placed on a race along with 75% of all prize money paid both to the winning owners and the gamblers. 75% on all admission charges for public entry into race tracks.
Revenue raised from such taxes should be used exclusively for ensuring the welfare, medical treatment and re-homing of the animals after being retired.

Governments should also enact new laws that:
    A. Make it a criminal offence to competitively race any animal more than twice in a calendar month.
    B. Make it a criminal offence to transport a racing animal by road or rail more than 400 miles in any 24 hour period without having a minimum of 4 by 1 hour breaks for gentle exercise, food and water.
    C. Make it mandatory for all racing animals to be examined by independent veterinarians appointed by the state, at the owners expense, prior to and after each race.
    D. Make it mandatory to retire and arrange re-homing of animals from racing after not more than 6 years in the case of horses and 4 years for dogs. All costs of transportation to the re-homing centre, along with food and medical care for a period of 6 months from the date of retirement should be at the owners expense.
