Tell Oil Company to Stop Using Flawed Drilling Gear After Oil Spill

Target: Carl-Henric Svanberg, Chairman of BP Oil Company

Goal: Tell BP Oil Company to fix their equipment to prevent another catastrophic oil spill

During the Deep water Horizon oil rig tragedy of 2010, it was said that design problems with an equipment called the “blowout prevention system” (which is a sequence of caps and valves that was supposed to cut the drill pipe and short circuit any explosion) resulted in the oil spill accident. Unfortunately, according to the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation board, even after the oil rig disaster, the same equipment is still being used in drilling today. The board ruled that the blowout preventer failed, causing the spill, but this issue has still not been fixed even with improved guidelines for deep water drilling. This could cause possible safety breaches and makes it possible for another oil rig incident to occur in the future.

According to the LA Times, the Chemical Safety board focused its investigation on the said blowout preventer system that sits under the drilling rig. If oil is under high pressure and hits the drilling pipes, the blowout preventer should cut off the flow near the platform. In the incident of the Deep water Horizon, the valves in the blowout preventer locked up, letting pressure build up, which made the drill pipe bend and caused the spill.

Since 2010, several researchers have investigated the slip-ups that occurred on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion. The puncture in BP’s well in 2010 spilled millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Since the accident, only one oil company has made a new blowout preventer that is able to cut a bent pipe, but sadly many other oil companies, such as BP, still use the same equipment that was responsible for the oil rig at the Deep water Horizon.

Please sign this petition to ask the BP oil company to fix their equipment in order to prevent another horrible oil spill.

Dear Chairman of BP, Carl-Henric Svanberg,

Several reports have reminded us of the 2010 oil spill that spewed millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. These reports are resurfacing because researchers have noticed that those same equipment that were responsible for the spill are still being used today. It is dangerous and careless of BP to be using the equipment that could cause another catastrophic oil spill.

Several researchers have looked into the problem that occurred in the Deep water Horizon drilling rig incident. All of these researchers are pointing fingers at the blowout preventer. Please set an example for other oil and gas companies and fix the mistakes that could cause another horrific gas explosion. This small fix will be able to save the of lives of thousands of people and animals. Please use your resources to fix the blowout preventer system.
