Target: Ed Smith, Chief Clerk of the Supreme Court of Montana
Goal: Thank judiciary for the suspension of rape apologist judge who gave lenient sentences for convicted rapists and abusers
A judge recently blamed a 14-year-old rape victim for the sexual abuse that she suffered. His comments were sexist and misogynistic, saying that this young girl was somehow in control of her situation. These comments were quickly dismissed by the Supreme Court, which called for the suspension of this judge due to his insensitive and wholly inappropriate comments and sentencing. Thank the judiciary for its swift action and encourage it to take further action against this sexist and irresponsible judge.
Judge G. Todd Baugh of Montana commented that the 14-year-old rape victim “seemed older than her chronological age,” claiming that she was in more control than her defense said. The young girl later committed suicide as a result of her attack. By denouncing Judge Baugh’s comments and asserting that they were inappropriate and sexist, the Montana judiciary maintained its position as a beacon of justice, even when dealing with its own members. Ed Smith, the Chief Clerk of The Supreme Court of Montana, suspended Judge Baugh and ordered him to withdraw his previous statements and lenient court rulings against rapists. While this is the appropriate action to be taken, more must be done to prevent further inappropriate sentencing and rape apologists in the court.
Applaud Chief Clerk Ed Smith’s reprimand of Judge Baugh and ask him to push further in demanding Judge Baugh’s resignation.
Dear Chief Clerk Ed Smith,
I recently became aware of Judge G. Todd Baugh’s lenient rulings for rapists and disgusting comments regarding a young girl’s assault. I was quickly relieved when I saw your decision to temporarily suspend Judge Baugh and your comments denouncing his sentences and sexist statements. Your swift action demonstrates your commitment to justice and upholding the law, even against a judge of your courts.
By addressing Judge Baugh’s awful comments directly, you showed a fearless ability to confront your own members of the judiciary and defend the proper justice and innocent people. However, I also believe more action should be taken. More than 30,000 petitions have been signed asking for Judge Baugh’s resignation. Your suspension, while prompt, is not as severe as it should be. I applaud your current reprimands of Judge Baugh but also ask that you demand his resignation in response to the appeals of the people and the upholding of proper justice.
