Applaud Gum Litter Taskforce for Keeping Streets Clean

Target: Paul Kelly, Chairman of the Gum Litter Taskforce

Goal: Applaud the Gum Litter Taskforce for helping people realize that chewing gum waste is litter

The next time you walk down a sidewalk, take a look down and start counting how many pieces of littered chewing gum you see. Carelessly discarded chewing gum is a significant issue for many cities and towns around the world. Littered gum diminishes the value of beautiful public spaces and is costly for local municipalities to remove.

Ireland’s Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) promotes a behavior change through local campaigns to create more attractive spaces that residents can enjoy and be proud of. Mayor Oisín Quinn launched GLT’s national environmental awareness campaign in Dublin, and Mayor Cllr Kieran Dennison recently launched the initiative in Fingal. The campaign aims to reduce littered gum by raising awareness that tossing chewed gum on the ground is littering and subject to a €150 fine. Gum litter reduced by 33 percent between 2012 and 2013 in Ireland, and 93 percent of people surveyed understood that discarded gum was litter.

“This campaign set out to change consumer behavior and the results speak for themselves,” said GLT Chairman Paul Kelly. “There has been demonstrable proof that educating people about the responsible disposal of gum has a profound impact on attitudes and behavior. We are committed to continuing to educate consumers to ensure that there is a culture which makes littering unacceptable.”

Sign the below petition to applaud the Gum Litter Taskforce for tirelessly advocating for cleaner public spaces. Urge local authorities in other Irish cities to follow the lead of these committed mayors and serve as an example to the rest of the world.

Dear Chairman Kelly,

Thank you for educating the public about chewing gum litter and the importance of disposing it properly. Through fun and engaging environmental awareness campaigns, you remind people how simple actions affect the environment. By imposing a €150 fine for gum litter violations, you are emphasizing the severity of the situation.

I am urging you to continue creating unique and engaging gum litter campaigns that capture the attention of people of all ages. The only solution to curbing the litter problem is to recreate a culture that understands that all forms of litter are unacceptable. Please serve as an example to the rest of the world of how simple education and awareness tactics can have a profound impact upon positive behavior and attitude.
