Target: Minister of Environmental Protection Zhou Shengxian
Goal: Stop removing mountains in the name of development
China continues to do unprecedented damage to its environment, endangering the lives of not just humans, but the wildlife as well. The country has taken bulldozers to its mountains, trying to sculpt land for citizens to live on. Since such a practice has never been seen before, scientists are not sure what the consequences of these actions will be.
Researchers from the Chang’an University have confirmed that dozens of mountains have been cleared away by bulldozers causing air and water degradation, soil erosion, and flooding. One professor from the Science and Engineering department said that since a land development project such as this has never been conducted before, there are no guidelines. Mountains in the cities of Chongqing, Shiyan, Yichang, Lanzhou and Yan’an have been leveled with bulldozers to make room for their citizens. The remaining soil and rock is used to fill in valleys.
The removal of mountains has been used in mining operations like the ones conducted in the United States, however the way China is conducting removal is at an unparalleled scale and there are few guidelines. Removing such large land masses carries the risk of dust particles from the soil polluting the water, and of sparking landslides and flash floods from soil erosion. These disasters not only affect humans, but the wildlife as well.
Tell the Chinese government to stop destroying the environment to make way for urban expansion. The country already has to deal with soil and air pollution, on top of finding out that a vast majority of its ground water is polluted. Sign this petition and stop the removal of China’s mountains.
Dear Zhou Shengxian,
I am writing this letter to demand your country stop removing mountains for the purpose of providing more homes to your citizens. The procedure is extremely detrimental to your environment, polluting your soil, water, and your air. The flattened land that you create from this removal project can also be unstable for any buildings that are erected. It is also concerning that there are very few guidelines regarding land removal and for the sake of your environment and people, this project needs to be halted.
Your country is already wrangling with serious environmental problems resulting from your industrial revolution. Your people are suffering from air, water, and soil pollution and very little has been done to curb these effects. Fix these issues first before you work on any land removal projects.
