Demand Major Retailers Stop Using Bee-Killing Pesticides

Target: CEO of Home Depot Frank Blake and CEO of Lowe’s Robert Niblock

Goal: Demand home improvement stores stop selling plants treated with bee-killing pesticides

When you buy honey bee-friendly plants or seeds at the store, you may unknowingly be doing bees harm. This is because many plants are sold pre-treated with neonicotinoids (aka neonics), a class of pesticides that have been linked to plummeting bee populations in recent years. Demand that major home improvement and garden supply retailers Home Depot and Lowe’s stop using deadly neonics on their plants.

A decade ago it became clear that honey bee populations were dropping rapidly, which is a matter of great concern since 1/3 of our food is pollinated by bees. After years of investigation, three main reasons have emerged: invasive mites, malnutrition, and a new class of insecticides known as neonics. After conducting its own research, the European Union has banned the use of neonics on plants attractive to bees. Additionally, many major home and garden stores in Europe have promised not to use neonics. It’s time to push our domestic home and garden stores to also stop using these harmful pesticides.

By signing this petition, you will be urging retail giants Home Depot and Lowe’s to stop using neonics and helping to save the lives of a honey bees, which play a crucial part in our ecosystem.

Dear Mr. Blake and Mr. Niblock,

I am greatly concerned about declining bee populations and colony collapse disorder given that bees are responsible for pollinating one-third of the food that we eat. Extensive research has found that one of the factors leading to cashing bee populations is a class of insecticides called neonicotinoids. It has come to my attention that your company uses neonicotinoids on some of the plants and seeds you sell. I cannot in good conscience buy plants from your stores unless I am sure they are neonicotinoids-free and I implore you to stop selling products contaminated with these deadly pesticides.

The European Union has banned the use of neonicotinoids on plants that are attractive to bees and many of Europe’s major home and garden stores have already committed not to sell products treated with neonicotinoids. I hope you will join these leaders in helping to protect honey bees and our food supply.
