Target: Senator Robert Hedlund
Goal: Encourage the movement to save animals from confining cages
The majority of factory farmed animals lead a miserable life. From human abuse to cages they cannot turn around in, the plight of factory farmed animals is real and many humans are attempting to provide the animals with basic comforts. One group in particular, the Massachusetts Coalition for Humane Farms (MCHF), travels around to many different cities in Massachusetts hoping to raise awareness about the horrible conditions factory farmed animals are forced to endure. A lawmaker in Massachusetts, Senator Robert Hedlund, publicly supports the efforts of the MCHF. Combined with the strength of the MCHF, this lawmaker’s dedication to the humane treatment of animals is an important asset in the fight for farmed animal rights.
MCHF has an important agenda: to push legislation that will decrease the use of confining crates in factory farm settings within state limits. If this legislation were to pass, farmers would not be allowed to keep animals in confining cages for long periods of time on any given day. Confining crates include gestation crates, battery cages and calf crates intended for veal production. These confining cages are notorious for giving animals sores and other medical issues due to the limited movement the cages allow. Gestation crates often do not allow a sow to turn around, let alone reach her snout to her shoulder or beyond. Battery cages, which confine chickens, do not allow a chicken to stretch its wings or easily turn around. The life of an animal raised for food should be comfortable before slaughter, in the very least.
Confining animal cages will someday be a disgusting part of human history. However, humans have not yet reached the no-animals-for-human-consumption plateau. Groups such as the MCHF are crucial for the future of factory farms. Applaud its efforts, along with those of Hedlund, and encourage factory farmed animal rights by signing this petition.
Dear Senator Hedlund,
It is my understanding that you are the official backer of the Massachusetts Coalition for Humane Farm’s movement to bring awareness to a bill that will give the freedom of movement to farm animals within the state. This bill, if passed, would ban extreme cases of confinement, such as a situation where a hen cannot lift her wings due to the confines of the cage she resides in. I want to thank you for speaking out about and publicly supporting this pressing issue.
With the help of lawmakers, farm animals will be granted deserved, basic freedoms. The ability to simply turn around seems like a minuscule freedom, but its absence is a reality for too many farm animals in Massachusetts. I urge you to continue to support basic freedoms of farmed animals and I applaud you for your efforts thus far. Please inform the Massachusetts Coalition for Humane Farms that its efforts are equally appreciated. Without organizations like the MCHF, farmed animals would have a much longer path to justice.
