Target: Mike Baker, World Society for the Protection of Animals CEO and Cristina Lapis, President of Millions of Friends
Goal: Applaud organizations for creating a sanctuary for abused and exploited bears in Romania
Recently, the grand official opening of the largest EU bear sanctuary was celebrated in Romania. The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) had partnered up with Millions of Friends (AMP) to build the Libearty Bear Sanctuary, to provide a wild habitat for bears that were saved from illegal captivity and mistreatment.
The AMP is “the oldest animal protection association in Romania,” and had partnered with WSPA to start building the sanctuary back in 2005 to address the problems that were facing bears in illegal captivity. Although the sanctuary had been serving bears for nearly eight years since it was first being built, it has now been fully completed and currently is home to 78 bears. The WSPA has been creating sanctuaries for bears across the globe since 1992.
Bears are often subject to mistreatments for various uses by their cruel captors. For entertainment, bears may be subject to agonizing training, forced to stand on their hind legs and dance for audiences. Bears are also used for bear-baiting, in which they have their teeth either removed or filed down, and are tied to a post as cruel owners release vicious dogs on the bears to initiate a fight. In these instances, bears must often endure having their ears, muzzle, and nose ripped open. They are never killed by the dogs since they provide valuable income for the owners. In some Asian countries, bears are farmed for their bile for medicinal use. This consists of individually entrapping bears in cramped cages and painfully extracting bile from their abdomens. These kinds of maltreatment make life excruciating for bears; bear sanctuaries provide a direct solution for these mistreated bears.
Please sign the petition below to show support for WSPA and AMP’s life-saving work for the Romanian bears through the establishment of a bear sanctuary. These creatures need as much support as they can get to be protected from the inhumane treatment that they endure.
Dear Mike Baker and Cristina Lapis,
It was reassuring to read about the official opening of the the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Romania. There are bears in illegal captivity all across the globe, and the mistreatment that they must endure is atrocious. The work that you do with providing the bears sanctuary will certainly not only enrich these deprived bears’ previous life conditions, but will also bring awareness to the need for salvation of these animals.
Thank you for the hard work and dedication you have put forth in providing a sanctuary for the mistreated bears in Romania. Please keep up the great work you are doing. I look forward to hearing more about the development of bear sanctuaries.
