Target: Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav
Goal: Stop police indifference regarding rape and murder
Two Indian girls from the Dalit caste (untouchables) went to defecate in a field because they didn’t have toilets in their homes. The father of one of those girls didn’t see them return home and requested the aid of a police officer to locate them. Instead of helping the man, the police officer slapped him. The girls were later found hanging from mango trees near their homes, and autopsy results showed that they were gang raped and then strangled to death. When news of this murder reached Indian citizens, women came out to protest in the Lucknow area, and police unleashed water cannons upon the protesters. If the police had not been indifferent and actually did their job, these girls’ lives might have been saved and there wouldn’t be the current backlash against police forces.
Since the 2013 gang rape of a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus, Indian women have demanded heavier penalties for rapists. It has led to a twenty year sentence for rapists, and has made voyeurism, stalking, and sex trafficking of women illegal. It should also be a crime if police officers didn’t investigate a case when it was reported.
Women are furious because many feel that nothing has changed. When reporters demanded to know how Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav could allow this to happen he responded angrily. “Aren’t you safe? Then why are you worried? What’s it to you?” Journalists and citizens have every right to be worried. Mothers, daughters, sisters, nieces, and cousins can be hurt by this indifferent culture. Everyone needs to understand that this is a problem and that women must be treated with more respect. Sign this petition and demand that the police care about their citizens.
Dear Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav,
As I am sure you are aware, the death of two teenage girls has sparked outrage among the women in India. These girls were gang raped and then strangled to death, and when the father tried to seek help, the police physically assaulted him. I am repulsed by the indifference of your police force, and I cannot believe that some officers would even choose to cooperate with the rapists. This is appalling and I cannot believe a human being would willingly inflict harm onto another person.
I am writing to demand that you foster compassion in your police force. They are obviously indifferent to the plight of women and your own lack of concern makes many citizens worry. Women should be treated with respect and dignity, not viewed an item.
