Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Support law that cuts down on coal emissions
The Obama administration is proposing a piece of legislation that would cut down on coal emissions by a whopping 30 percent by 2030. It is the President’s boldest action in climate change and support needs to be garnered if we want to stop the melting of our ice sheets and other catastrophic events. This new law is called the Clean Power Plan, introduced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
According to the organization, the proposal “will maintain an affordable, reliable energy system, while cutting pollution and protecting our health, and environment now and for future generations.” It’s estimated that the plan will bring in $48 billion to $82 billion in public health and climate benefits. However, opponents to the law state their concerns about rising electric bills and a cut to jobs. The Obama administration has since countered these fears, stating that public safety outweigh these concerns. According to the EPA, 30 percent of the nation’s energy will be made up by coal, and another 30 percent by natural gas in 2030. States will have three years to come up with a plan to reach their emission targets.
This policy needs to be supported as the effects of climate change are already happening. The administration is desperately trying to garner support and convince Americans that climate change does exist. The burning of fossil fuels is having a negative impact on our planet and immediate action is necessary to reverse it. Sign this petition if you want our country to turn toward renewable energy instead of fossil fuel for power.
Dear President Obama,
Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed sweeping changes to coal factories that would reduce the amount of emissions emitted from all facilities. I am writing this letter to express my support, as the effects of climate change are being seen now.
It greatly saddens me that many Americans do not believe in climate change, especially when parts of the country are experiencing heavy rains or severe droughts. I am hoping that these new rules will help alleviate some of these problems and bring our climate closer to its natural state. Opponents to this law should realize that in curbing coal emissions, it would allow the nation to discover and implement renewable resources.
Please ensure that this plan becomes law. Our wildlife, environment and planet will benefit greatly from these changes.
