Target: President Xi Jinping
Goal: Demand retrial of more than 50 Muslim Uighurs who were sentenced via mass trial
Recently China sentenced 55 people accused of terrorism at a stadium in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. It has been confirmed that most of the people sentenced were Muslim Uighurs, and the reason for this mass sentence was to quell public fears. Mass showy trials such as this violate international law, and China should conduct a retrial for these individuals.
These Muslim Uighurs were sentenced for terrorism, separatism, and murder. Three were sentenced to death. All of these sentences were read out in a packed stadium of 7,000 people, as the prisoners stood in the center wearing orange vests, guarded by armed police. Officials were behind this rally and it was considered a show of strength. Many believe that the Muslim Uighurs are responsible for violent attacks on Chinese citizens, such as a stabbing that took place in a train station. China’s reason for creating a stunt out of the mass trial is to prevent attacks like this from happening again, and to send a clear message to would be attackers.
This display of strength shows China’s disregard for human rights. The prisoners should be in a courthouse, not a stadium. Their trials should not be for show, and a judge should have been present. This stunt not only violates human rights — it also will not stop public fear, and will only sow more of it. The Chinese government needs to stop these mass trials and ensure that all people receive a fair trial for their misdeeds. Sign this petition and demand the country to conduct a fair and transparent retrial, where the defendants are read their sentences in a courthouse instead of a stadium packed with onlookers.
Dear President Xi Jinping,
I am writing this letter to express my contempt for the way your country has dealt with recent terrorist attacks. Recently 55 Muslim Uighurs were read their sentences in front of a packed stadium. The charges included terrorism, separatism, and murder. I have no doubt that this stunt drew attention, as 7,000 people attended, but I find it grossly humiliating and appalling that their sentences were turned into a show.
As international law dictates, everyone has the right to a fair and speedy trial. Mass trials not are accepted and each individual should be judged on a case by case basis. These individuals were not read their sentences in a courthouse, nor were their trials done individually. I ask that your country support human rights and conduct a retrial. This trial should be fair and transparent and conducted in a courthouse with a presiding judge.
