Prevent Live Sheep Export to Iran

Target: Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott

Goal: Stop Australia from resuming its export of live sheep to Iran

Australia has decided to end its 40-year boycott on live animal exports to Iran. The ban has been in place because of Iran’s notoriously horrendous animal welfare standards. The decision to reverse the ban has already drawn a great deal of criticism and must be reversed before any harm is done.

The decision is largely based on profit. Iran was Australia’s biggest market for live sheep exports before the boycott, and the trade resumption will open up a potentially $20 million a year market. Iran has agreed to animal health certification protocols, but this hasn’t stopped them from violating numerous animal welfare laws and United Nations Trade Agreements in the past.

Politicians and animal rights groups alike have spoken up against the reversal, describing it as a step backward for animal welfare. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals released a statement saying: “The best welfare outcome for Australian animals is for them to be slaughtered here to Australian standards.” Independent MP Andrew Wilkie also spoke up, saying, “It’s horrifying.”

Several organizations are working to reverse the decision in the hopes of expanding the chilled-meat trade so that the welfare of the animals can be ensured.

Many live animals that are exported for slaughter have their throats slit while fully conscious, millions die at sea, and more than 30 investigations have revealed that the animals endure routine abuse and cruel slaughtering practices. Live export is unimaginably cruel on its own, but when the destination country is already a place that violates laws and has a dark history of cruelty to animals, they aren’t just being shipped to be slaughtered, they are being shipped to be tortured.

Please sign the petition below and demand that Australia reverse its decision to resume live exports to Iran so sheep throughout Australia will not have to endure horrendous cruelty for the sake of profit.

Dear Prime Minister Abbott,

Australia recently decided to end its boycott on live animal exports to Iran. Many politicians and animal rights groups have already spoken up, expressing their concern that this is a step in the wrong direction for animal welfare. Iran is notorious for its foul treatment the animals it imports and no regulations established by Australia will likely stop that. Iran has violated these protocols in the past.

Live trade is cruel enough and resuming exports with Iran will only put millions of animals at risk of being tortured and abused. Please reverse this decision and keep Australia’s animal welfare standards moving in the right direction.
