Remove Transgender Teen from Solitary Confinement

Target: Governor of Connecticut Dannel Malloy

Goal: Remove transgender teen from solitary confinement

A young transgender teen is currently trapped in solitary confinement in a Connecticut prison after years of abuse and mistreatment at the hands of her family and state corrective institutions. She wrote a beautiful and heartbreaking letter to the governor of Connecticut from her jail cell about her lifelong isolation, and how the state is continuing that alienation by forcing her into solitude.

Jane Doe has been violently abused and sexually and physically assaulted her entire life, in many instances because of the choices she has made about gender presentation, a right that all human beings should have. Doe reacted aggressively to a staff member of a Massachusetts juvenile facility after she was grabbed from behind so that the staff could restrain her. As a survivor of sexual assault and sustained abuse, she exhibits violent tendencies, especially when caught off guard.

She was sent to an adult prison facility and placed in solitary confinement because of a federal law that prohibits minors from being detained with adult prisoners. Solitary confinement is a mentally exhausting, brutal punishment and in a civil society should not even be used against adult prisoners, but to confine a child without human contact is particularly inhumane. It is cruel and unusual punishment, plain and simple. This child deserves the care of a proper mental health facility to help her work through her issues of violence.

Please sign this petition to have the transgender teen taken out of solitary confinement and moved to a mental health facility where she can get the help that she needs.

Dear Governor Dannel Malloy,

A young transgender teen is being held in solitary confinement in your state.  Solitary confinement is an inhumane and psychologically damaging punishment even for adult inmates, but to allow it to be used against a child is cruel and unusual. It is an incredible abuse of power.

The girl in question has a history of violence, both committed against her and that she has committed herself. But as a young person, she deserves the chance to be rehabilitated in a mental health facility instead of being brushed aside and forgotten about in solitary confinement.

Please release Jane Doe from solitary confinement and send her to a mental health facility where she can be rehabilitated after years of abuse and sexual violence.
